Cooking ranges, hobs, ovens and similar stationary appliances
 
Safe use advice for stationary electric cooking ranges, hobs, ovens for household or similar use with a rated voltage of not more than 250V for single phase appliances and 480V for other appliances.
 
This advice also applies to appliances not intended for normal household use, but may be useful to laypersons in shops, light industry and on farms and other premises for normal housekeeping.
 
This advice is not intended to replace specific manufacturer.s information but can be used as a general guide.
 
This advice does not cater for young children or people who are physically weak.
 
When using the appliance:

  • Keep young children away from all surfaces of ranges, hobs and ovens since the surfaces become hot.
  • If the hob surface is of glass-ceramic or similar material, heed the following
  • WARNING . If the surface is cracked, switch off the appliance to avoid the possibility of electric shock.
  • During use, the appliance becomes hot.
  • Care should be taken to avoid touching heating elements inside the oven.
  • If the oven can be used as a grill with the door open:
  • Accessible parts may become hot when using the grill. Keep children away.
  • If the oven features Pyrolytic self-cleaning, excess spillage must be removed before cleaning. Do not leave utensils in the oven during cleaning.
  • Pyrolytic self-cleaning process surfaces may get hotter than usual. Keep children away.
  • The oven must be switched off before you remove any guard for cleaning or replacement. The guard must be replaced in accordance with instructions.
  • A steam cleaner must not be used for cleaning cooking ranges, hobs or ovens.
  • To avoid electric shock, make sure the appliance is switched off before you replace the lamp.
  • Always switch off all hotplates after use.
  • Metallic objects such as knives, forks, spoons and lids must not be placed on the hob surface of an induction hob, since it becomes hot.
  • Remove any spillage from the lid of a hob before you open the lid.
  • The hob surface should be allowed to cool before any fitted lid is closed.
  • If the hob incorporates halogen lamps, do not stare at the halogen lamps.
  • If the range is suitable for and is placed on a base, ensure the appliance does not slip from the base
  • WARNING. To prevent the appliance from accidentally tipping, for example, through a child climbing onto an open oven door, you may need to ensure a stabilising means is installed. If instructions and stabilising methods are not supplied, check with the manufacturer.

  • If the appliance is for indoor use only, do not use outdoors.
  • Do not immerse the appliance in water unless it is designed for this purpose.
  • Keep hands, fingers, feet, toes and hair away from dangerous moving parts, cutting blades and the like.

  • Make sure you have dry hands when operating an electrical appliance.
  • Do not use a damaged appliance.
  • An appliance may not be intended for use by children or people with an illness or disability without supervision.
  • Young children should not be allowed to play with the appliance.
  • Some appliances require special precautions for installation or user maintenance or both.
  • The plug must be removed from the socket-outlet before any cleaning or maintenance is done.
  • Do not place cord extension sockets or portable power outlet boards where they may be splashed or where moisture may get in.
  • Ensure ventilation holes or outlets are not blocked or partially obstructed.
  • If a fixed appliance does not have a supply cord and plug or other means for disconnection from the supply, a means for disconnection must be incorporated into the fixed wiring according to the Wiring Rules.
  • If the supply cord or plug is damaged:
  • The manufacturer or its service agent or a similarly qualified person must replace the cord to prevent an accident.
  • Appliances with specially prepared cords must be replaced by a special cord or assembly available from the manufacturer or its service agent.
  • Other appliances that have a supply cord that cannot be replaced, should be scrapped.
  • The appliance should be maintained in order to ensure a long, useful life and to protect the operator against electric shock or mechanical mishaps.

Dishwashers
 
Safe use advice for electric dishwashers for household use for washing and rinsing dishes, cutlery and other utensils with rated voltage of not more than 250V for single phase appliances and 480V for other appliances.
 
This advice also applies to appliances not intended for normal household use, but may be useful to laypersons in shops, light industry and on farms and other premises for normal housekeeping.
 
This advice is not intended to replace specific manufacturer.s information but can be used as a general guide.
 
This advice does not cater for young children or people who are physically weak.
 
The appliance should be used with;

  • The maximum number of place settings for which it is designed.
  • A connection to water mains using new hose-sets. Old hose-sets must not be reused, unless the hoses are permanently attached to the appliance.
  • For dishwashers with ventilation openings in the base, ensure that a carpet does not obstruct the openings.
When connecting to the water supply observe the manufacturers ratings for:
  • The maximum permissible inlet water pressure, in Pascals or bars.
  • The minimum permissible inlet water pressure, in Pascals or bars, if this is necessary for correct operation.
WARNING:
  • DISHWASHER DETERGENTS ARE STRONGLY ALKALINE. THEY CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IF SWALLOWED.
  • AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN AND EYES AND KEEP CHILDREN AWAY FROM THE DISHWASHER WHEN THE DOOR IS OPEN.
  • CHECK THAT THE DETERGENT RECEPTACLE IS EMPTY AFTER THE WASH CYCLE.

Rangehoods
 
Safe use advice for electric range hoods to be installed above household cooking ranges and cooking appliances with a rated voltage of no more than 250V.
 
Appliances not intended for normal household use, but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public.such as appliances for use by lay persons in shops, light industry and on farms.are covered by this advice.
 
This advice is not intended to replace specific manufacturer.s information but can be used as a general guide.
 
This advice does not cater for young children or people who are physically weak.
 
When using the appliances:

  • There should be adequate room ventilation when the range hood is used at the same time as appliances burning gas or other fuels;
  • NOTE. This does not apply to appliances designed to discharge the air only back into the room.
  • Do not flambé under the range hood.
  • The exhaust air must not be discharged into a flue used for exhausting fumes from appliances burning gas or other fuels;
  • For electrical appliances, the minimum distance between the supporting surface for the cooking vessels on the hob and the lowest part of the range hood shall be at least 65cm. When the range hood is located above a gas appliance this distance shall be at least 60 cm.
  • Replace the lamp with a replacement of the correct type and rating.
  • Rangehood and filters must be cleaned regularly
  • There is a risk of fire if cleaning is not carried out correctly, contact the manufacturer or Australian supplier if in doubt.
